A Tabla Duet

Tabla Upaj, a jugalbhandi , or duet, is composed by Pandit Divyang Vakil, master musician and guru of Ahmedabad (in west India), and performed by two tabla- players: Sejal Kukadia and Loren Oppenheimer. This classical piece is played in a rhythmic cycle of 16 beats, called Taal Tintaal . The duo play a broad range of energetic tabla compositions, including peshkar, kayda, rela, chakradaar, and tukada . They expertly demonstrate variations in tempo and rhythm. |

| The two artists exchange question-answer ( sawal-jawab ) phrases and engage in an exciting interplay of creative percussive poetry. The challenging aspect here is that in a duet such as this, it is not possible to step out of the beat even for a fraction of the second, and so a total concentration of the rhythm is necessary. |
